It’s vital to keep the momentum going in the studio. Having a routine, or ritual even is a bit like a pianist practising scales or a footballer warming up. In painting terms it’s the perfect antidote to ‘blank page’ anxiety. I’m a big fan of the American painter Dennis Sheehan. He’s been painting for way longer than me and he always does a couple of studies every day. That’s been his kickstarter activity for 3 decades or more and he still can’t get enough. Studies free you up. They force you to plumb your imagination. Look inside. I’m hoping this will prove transformative for me in my quest to ‘show less and say more’. I’m light years behind Dennis but I’m determined to follow his example. Here are some small entirely fictional interior landscapes. All done in about half an hour each. Thoroughly addictive, like Dennis says.
